Die Cut Inlay with Added Dimension

Die cut inlay is a very easy and great technique to add a lot of interest to your card without adding a lot of bulk. But today I wanted to add some “bulk” and dimension to inlaid die cuts and create even more interest. I only added about two layers of dimension, so this card could still easily be mailed without adding extra postage, but adding a few layers of dimension to a pretty monochromatic card is a great way to add interest, depth, shadow etc to a very simple card. Make sure to watch the video below to see exactly how today’s card was made!

ENJOY!!

This card started with ALOT of die cutting. I used the “Heart 2 Heart #1 Die” from Papertrey Ink, which is a  coffee cup, and die cut 6 evenly space into a white, stitched rectangle die cut. Also, using the same die, I die cut six cups from red card stock, white card stock, and kraft card stock. While I had my die cutting machine out I also die cut a scalloped rectangle die with stitching from white card stock as well.

Before doing any inlaying whatsoever I wanted to add a little bit of hand doodling with a white gel pen to each red die cut cup. This was my way of mimicking a Starbuck’s Christmas cup for this year. I didn’t go with their designs specifically, I kept it very simple and something I could achieve. If you’re not comfortable with hand drawing, pattern stamps, background stamps, even smaller stencils and white heat embossing would be a great alternative! Next, I cut the lid portion off the white die cuts and also the middle of the kraft die cuts. With all of my components ready to go, I could start putting together the card!

First I adhered the white rectangle to the scalloped rectangle with double sided adhesive and using that same adhesive I inlaid each red cup into a die cut space in the white rectangle. For added dimension I adhered each lid and kraft cup holder with foam adhesive. Finally, I used fun foam and double sided adhesive to adhere the scalloped panel onto an A2 top folding card base. I didn’t add a stamped sentiment to the outside of the card, but on the inside I did stamp “Tis the Season” from the Think Big Favorites #8 stamp set, also from Papertrey Ink, with red dye ink.

I love making cards and using techniques that can easily be manipulated into any other style you might be making. For instance, just by changing up the paper to patterned paper, adding a bow, distressing the edges, etc. you can manipulate this very clean and simple card into your own style! Also, you can use this technique for any occasion you might be needing to make a card for, so have fun with it and be creative!
